Yogathon Fundraiser
for Multiple Sclerosis 2005
Yoga in Sugar Land
takes on the fight against Multiple Sclerosis!
A Yogathon is a
Yoga(Mara)thon, an endurance event just like any other "thon", this
time doing yoga postures! One would only do a Yogathon for a very good reason,
and supporting the fight against Multiple Sclerosis is a compelling one. This
devastating disease affects approximately 400,000 people in the USA; and every
week about 200 people are diagnosed
This Yogathon involved
doing 108 Sun Salutations. A Sun Salutation is a sequence consisting of 9
movements, which puts your body through its full range of motion. This sequence
forms the basis for most Yoga routines and is reasonably simple - until you
attempt 108 of them!
The Yoga-thon was a unique
event. 17 participants
completed 108 Sun Salutations in two hours, done as 9 sets of 12 with breaks in
between. Five local yoga teachers took turns in leading a set, each sharing
their own unique style. Every set focused on a different aspect of the
challenges faced by people living with MS: Muscle weakness, balance,
co-ordination, spastisticy, paralysis, fatigue, forgetfulness, and depression
being mindful throughout of how we often take all this for granted of how
fortunate we are. The last set was done in gratitude and prayerful for a cure.
We raised a good deal of money for MS and equally important, we created a greater awareness of MS. Thank you with all my heart to each one of you for being a part of this great event!
